Work and Snacks
Snack time is not just for kids. It is important for adults to also snack throughout the day. Going long periods without eating can cause blood sugar to drop, slow your metabolism down, make you very crabby, and cause you to overeat later. So, my rule of thumb is to eat small snacks in between your typical meals (I like to snack every hour if I can). So, what's a good snack?
Fruits and Veggies are always a great option. If you have an office or personal space a work I recommend, people keep bananas and apples there since they don't require refrigeration. Trail mix (preferably homemade and nut based) is also an excellent work snack. This way you can avoid the vending machine at work and have a healthy snack right at your fingertips!
If you have time to pack snacks before leaving for work, I recommend cuties or oranges, snap peas, pineapples. Things that go great with hummus: carrots, red or green peppers, cucumbers.
Rule of thumb, if you have a fruit or veggie, start with that. Not in the mood for a fruit or vegetable, eat it anyways. If you are still hungry after that, drink a glass of water. I would always highly recommend making water a frequent flyer at work. Keep it around, drink it throughout the day. Every time you snack or eat a meal you should also be drinking water. Our bodies aren't good at differentiating between hunger and thirst, so you have to be the judge when it comes to this issue. Once you are in the habit and crave water, you will start to know when your body is hungry and when it is thirsty.
So, healthy snack it up! Even if your meals aren't the healthiest, you are at least sneaking in some of those healthy things throughout the day. Let's just start there and see where we can end up.
